The Will and the Worthy
The cities of Earth lie in burning ruin. The insectoid soldiers of the Annihilation Wave sweep across the planet, decimating the dwindling pockets of resistance. Legions of chitinous Wave ships fill the skies. Above the Earth hovers the conqueror's flagship and those of his Queens. As the world crumbles and burns, ANNIHILUS reigns supreme in his victory. His old foes the Fantastic Four have fallen, as have all of Earth's mightiest heroes.
All save one.
Annihilus stands atop the burnt-out Baxter Building beside a flag made of a torn Fantastic Four costume. From here he can survey the shuddering demise of Manhattan, and with it, Earth's hopes. "I am the will and the way!" he shrieks, his voice echoing through cracked and broken city streets. Bio-technological insectoid warriors crawl through the wreckage, searching for survivors and other prizes. Smoke fills the air. "This world is mine! MINE!"
Clouds roil overhead, and thunder shatters the sky. The rumbling boom drowns out Annihilus and makes the very city tremble. Lightning crashes, lancing from the storm-wracked skies down about the Baxter Building. Annihilus looks to the sky as a long figure descends from the heart of the storm. He is no man—he is a god, an Asgardian. The Odinson. The mighty THOR, GOD OF THUNDER. His red cape billows in the fierce winds that buffet the Baxter Building. In his grip lies the Uru hammer Mjolnir, one of the most powerful weapons in any universe. In his eyes, rage. The wrath of the storm pales in comparison to the anger of the Thunder God.
"Well you have come!" sneers Annihilus. "The Earth is fallen, Asgardian. Your friends lie dead at my hands. My Annihilation Wave devours the very heart of this universe, and soon we shall turn our attention to other realms. You should return to your home to enjoy what precious little time remains."
Thor's grim visage is unmoved. He has no words to bandy with a would-be conqueror. His rage is the calm before the storm, before he lets loose all of the ire in his heart—and the power in his limbs. "You have destroyed lives, insect. Countless lives. How many memories of a father cherishing his daughter, a mother her son, a sister her brother, a lover her other half?"
"You should thank me, Thunderer!"
Mjolnir's leather-bound handle creaks as Thor's grip tightens. "Thank you, monster? You have murdered an entire world. A good world. My world. E'en now I hear their cries as this world drowns in its own blood."
"Yes. I have spared you concern over this pathetic little bauble. You may return to Asgard and await the end among your mead-swilling louts you call family. Go now back to your home, and pray that Annihilus saves it for last, that you might live in fear that much longer. You have no more reason to fight for Earth. How shall you fare when you fight for a dead, ashen world? From whence comes your righteous fury now, Asgardian?"
Thor grits his teeth. "Enough, murderer. You are the fool playing at a game he cannot win. What of my purpose? You have not taken it from me." Thor hefts Mjolnir to the sky and serpentine streaks of lightning pour into it from on high. "Midgard was as much my home as is Asgard. You have simply given me nothing left to lose."
Annihilus brings to bear a glowing rod crackling with cosmic energy. "So be it! Battle, then? You wish to face me for the honor of your once-home? I should expect no more reason from a brute. You will join your fellows in this grave, and then I will claim your weapon as my trophy."
"Mjolnir against your Cosmic Control Rod, then. Let battle be joined. Thor will strike you down this day or perish in the attempt, but by my will Midgard will have her voice. This world goes not quietly into oblivion. Let me herald its ending...WITH A VOICE OF THUNDER!"
